Re: Aqua Data Studio 6.0

I'm curious what other's think of Aquafolds newest pricing scheme.

I've been using the free edition of Aqua Data Studio for about 3 years now for "hobby" projects where I use MySQL and Access databases.

In my professional life, unfortunately almost 100% of my work is in MS SQL and I'm a MS Certified partner. Subsequently in that world I have access to MS Enterprise manager and MS Query Analyzer all the time. Therefore, I've never been able to justify shelling out more than $50 or $60 for a version of ADS that I could use for professional use.

Well, the other day I found out that Auqafold has removed the free version of their product so now you're only option (unless your an OSS developer or teacher) is to shell out $399.00 per seat to get access to their product.

For me, this is a complete deal breaker. I absolutely LOVE ADS as a Query Analyzer replacement and if it was only $50.00 or $60.00 I'd be more than willing to shoot them my credit card number for a couple of copies. However, at $399.00, I can't justify it as a personal expense and if I try to bill it to my company (even though I'm one of the owners) the reaction is going to be "why are we paying that much per seat for something we basically already have in MS Query Analyzer!?!"

I definitely appreciate the cost involved in developing and supporting a product as fantastic as ADS. However, I personally think Aquafold may be shooting themselves in the foot by setting an entry level price so high that people wont be willing to "just give it a try", people will just dismiss it immediately. Now, they do offer a very generous multi-month extended trial period which might be sufficient, but even after that period, the "in the trenches" IT person who personally now loves this new tool they've been using for a few months still has to pitch the expense to their boss... who's going to say "why? We already have tools that do that!"

That's my take on this situations and I'm just curious what other people might think.

Regards
