Yeah- and 64 bit Intel only? That seems to exclude everything but the very newest of hardware. There are a lot of 32 bit Intel boxes in the wild that could all be classified as current hardware. Yes, I'm complaining. Yes, I know everyone will say that some of us will never be happy. They are probably right, if we continue to rely on Apple to make us happy developers.

Re: So Long Apple. The Party's Over

It's amazing that people who can't read can claim to be software developers. If you RTFA, you'll notice that this is only a very early pre-release version for people in the Apple Developer program to help debug. When they release the final version it will no doubt be a Universal Binary. And yes, all those who complained loud and long (and continue to do so) sound like cry-baby whiners. As the more rational people on this thread noted, Apple WILL release Java 6 in the not too distant future. Considering the huge amount of software releases coming out of Apple these days it is not at all surprising or unreasonable that Java 6 release took a bit more time than Leopard.

Re: So Long Apple. The Party's Over

This thread, and the blog posting that spawned it, has become unfortunately infamous. The amount of teeth-gnashing, whining, and all-around asshattedness has been embarrassing to watch. I believe that the silent majority here has really never doubted that Apple would eventually ship Java6, and the voices of doom have been watched with bemusement. I only hope this serves as a lesson, although my cynicism these days is such that I doubt it.

... and is validated by the previous poster's complaints about the dev seed being 64-bit. *sigh*

Re: So Long Apple. The Party's Over

*sigh* indeed.

You are missing the point. We know Apple is working on the port. We all expect it to ship *eventually*. But Apple is not communicating on the project's expected release nor its current status. They've even censored Java6 inquiries on their forums. They won't talk about it at all until it's done.

Meanwhile, downstream ISVs need information to make effective business plans. Folks are justifiably pissed that Apple--the company they've enriched by buying their products--won't offer them the courtesy of a simple press release to clarify the situation.

Re: So Long Apple. The Party's Over

The only embarrassing point about this thread is to find how many selfish an rude people are out there. Yes, this is pretty direct speaking and it's somewhat unusual of me, but I've lost my patience. There are two group of persons: A which is made by people who don't need Java 6 now, and B which is made by people who need Java 6 now. Now, if you're in group A is obvious that you don't understand why there are people in group B. In spite of people in group B filled blogs and forums with explanations of what their needs are, there's still a sub-group A1 which insists in calling "cry-baby whiners" people in group B. Now we could take our CV and throw them at group A1 and demonstrate that we don't "claim" to be software developers, but we _are_ and have a lot of arguments to demonstrate (and many of us, beyond developers, are architects and project managers). We don't do that just because this would bring the discussion into the mud, but the point is there: if you keep on asserting people in group B just "want to play with the latest toy" you're just insulting them. Gratuitously. Period.

Considering that it's unlikely that people in group A1 never had any kind of problem with technology providers, I mean I bet they at least one time in their life experienced some frustration about some missing technology piece they needed, it's appalling how they lack even basic human feelings such as empathy for colleagues.

Also: just by stating "it was obvious" that Apple was working on Java 6, and considering it normal that Apple didn't make the minimum advice about that and we're still missing any plan about the final released date and pretending that this is normal and that a serious professional can rely on this just demonstrates that people in group A1 lack of all the basic knowledge of project management and risk assessment. And when Java 6 will finally be out the incident won't be closed, since it's clear that the thing will repeat when it will be the turn of Java 7. It's again appalling that after 200 posts people still don't get this basic, simple point - and pretend to teach about life to others.

And finally pretending that in 2007 __paying customers__ must behave as yesmen just waiting for the Feudal Master to have a nice day and generously giving us a "gift" is ridiculous. The world goes on because people complain, not because of people keeping silent and accepting everything as is.

I don't like being classified and I don't care about Java6 either.
I do care about having a stable Java 5 runtime environment. If that makes me selfish and rude, so be it. I have a responsibility to the users of my companies software and I very much want to accept that responsibility.
Let's hope that Apple accepts it too as soon as possible.

Re: So Long Apple. The Party's Over

I'm not sure what's been going on with Apple and Leopard. Java issues now too? So far at least 10 apps that I use are suffering from some kind of minor Leopard issue. My FTP apps are suffering from upload speed and reliability issues that never occurred prior to Leopard, Corel Painter is having some minor issues, even Apple's own application Motion has been generating stupid errors under Leopard. Was Leopard truly ready for release when it was released? Was Apple spending so much time on the iPhone that it couldn't deliver the OS update they promised?

I don’t think the party’s over but I do think Apple needs to refocus It’s priorities on resolving Leopard’s issues. If they need to temporarily hire staff members from Sun and the BSD project to resolve the Java thing they shouldn’t hesitate to do so. I wonder how many Leopard OS issues are related to the broken Java 5 / no Java 6 problem? I doubt Apple can fix this problem without help from Sun.

Apple did promise a lot with Leopard. A fully 64bit UI through Carbon and Cocoa. What happened to that? What about the QT issue? What about the promised ZFS format Thing? Resolution independence coming anytime soon?

Stacks, Quicklook, Time machine, and a 3D dock are cool things but don’t seem like compelling enough reasons to upgrade from Tiger.

I only hope that by 10.5.2 - 10.5.3 all of the bugs will be fixed.
