After 4 years of hard work, jMonkeyEngine has announced the release of version 1.0of their 3D gaming library for Java. Prior to jMonkeyEngine, developing 3D games in java was quite difficult, as it required interacting directly with Java3D, or a thin layer ontop of OpenGL. jMonkeyEngine makes 3D game development much easier, providing a complete toolkit for developing powerful and high performance 3D games in Java. It's currently being used by several commercial game companies, as well as many open source Java gaming projects.

Firstly, Congratulations to the entire jME team on reaching the 1.0 milestone!
Secondly, what happened to the Java Gaming celebration month on JavaLobby? That was one short celebration! Honestly, it doesn't surprise me as most Java programmers are server side enterprise programmers. But we shouldn't blame Sun then for neglecting Java Gaming (and client side Java) all these years when it's obvious that the Java community itself can't be bothered about it.
Congratulations to the jME team. I remember downloading the code a while back and being really impressed with the documentation and clarity of the code.
This reminds me about a game I used to play called "Faery Tale" on the Amiga. I really used to like playing video games, like Faery Tale, Carrier Command, Alone in the Dark, Red Alert (PC, first one), etc.
I lost interest in video games, because I'm stopped seeing that element in games that used to get me so hooked.
Endless mindless first person shooter games had me rolling my eyes from day one pretty much. I did like Descent though. Never liked Doom.
Maybe people in the Java world can make some more "intelligent" games for a change?
At first glance this particular screen shot looks interesting. I might check this out, aside from just research to see how Java can be used to make games of course.

I think the only problem with jME is that its not popular enough, from the technical POV its really great

Hi Nilesh. Daniel had a bit of a medical emergency and will hopefully be back next month. I think I'll push him to do the Gaming month in Novemberbestuff.com - the best stuff in the world
