This is interesting for a couple of reasons.I've always wondered how modern DVD menuing systems were scripted.
I think having a Java enabled DVD player can be a very powerful platform for home entertainment.
For example, there's that new DVD game called "Scene It", kind of a Trivial pursuit with movie clips I guess. No doubt the interface it glitzy, but crude.
Imagine being able to have the entire game in the DVD player.
Or being able to present a game like Myst for this platform.
Imagine an interactive "How to" style DVD. Every see a one of those troubleshooting guides in the back of a Kramers auto manual? Imagine something like that with links to videos on how to do the procedure.
Put a little remote based number pad for simple data input.
The point is that the DVD player instantly becomes "as smart as" a computer, but (ideally) without the complexities.
And Java, with its JVM, is the perfect mainstream platform for this kind of application.
Big coup for Sun and Java overall. Let's hope the specs are tighter for the lowest common denominator platform to make the code more portable than it is for current cell phones.

We'll finally enter the 21st century with a Rich User Interface for home electronics.Now I suppose they'll start incorporating some kind of mouse or trackball type device in our remotes.
