Just ran into this very cool Java application that reminded me a lot of iTunes just minus the iPod synchronization.
I would suggest adding the default channels that you are asked to add, all the podcasts I listen to except the Java Posse was already added in there, very slick. Downloading of additional podcasts is easy and the program supports managing of all different types of media.
Pretty slick interface, needs some fine tuning in a few places, but otherwise intuitive and easy to use:

Hey Riyad! I'm one of the developers of ionDB. Thanks for the link, and for the smart idea to post our webstart button on your page.
Quick feature I'd like to share re: iPod sync - we definitely don't support it, as Apple uses a closed, proprietary storage system, but we can support syncing to any flash or hard-drive based media device that can mount as a drive and uses a folder system for media organization.
Just create a playlist, drag the podcasts, videos, etc you want to take with you, make sure they are downloaded, and then right-click on the playlist and selected "export to folder". Browse to your mounted device, and select a place to put everything.
It's not quite automatic, but its a start, and its what I use!
